Free Electrons Announces Cohort of 12 Energy Startups

Energy startups across eight countries are changing the energy systems of tomorrow

Today, Free Electrons announces its first cohort of 12 innovative energy startups selected from 450 applications across 51 countries. These innovative startups are advancing energy sectors including grid operations, renewable energy, electric vehicles and home energy management. Free Electrons is a platform to propel their solutions on  the global stage with the support of eight international utilities. Startups will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in regional ecosystems delivered through three uniquely structured week-long modules in Silicon Valley, Lisbon, Dublin and Singapore. As a bonus, startups will compete for up to $200,000 in prize money.

Diversity

This year’s cohort of 12 has already received a combined total of over $57 million in funding and almost $24 million in revenue. Diversity is apparent not just in the sectors represented but geographic location as well: four startups are from the United States, two from Israel, and one each from Germany, Ireland, Portugal, Switzerland, India and United Kingdom.

“We are thrilled with the final selection of companies – especially the geographic scope of the startups participating, ranging from India, Israel to Switzerland and the USA, demonstrating the global reach of the Free Electrons consortium” – Hendrik Tiesinga, Program Manager of Free Electrons

Module #1: Silicon Valley

With 12 startups selected, the first module will commence in May in Silicon Valley. Startups will engage in structured workshops and conversations with utilities where they will deep dive into challenges, technology and pilots. Powerhouse, a solar incubator and accelerator in Oakland, will also be hosting the startups in a speed-dating activity with investors. Because partnerships aren’t just built in the office, there will also be a mini-leadership retreat and informal networking events where startups can take the time to engage with the local energy community. The program will continue to Europe in June and Singapore in September.
